Matthew is a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, his current work focusses on investigating braiding of carbon fibre. Braiding allows for a high deposition rate with advantageous properties within the composite, however current problems with the simulation of the process and prediction of the mechanical properties limit it’s usage. Through his PhD Matthew aims to develop novel simulation techniques to predict the properties of braided structures with the aim to enable an increased usage in structural components. Prior to his PhD, Matthew completed an MEng at the University of Nottingham in Mechanical Engineering (Automotive stream). His final year project involved investigating the effects of using carbon fibre and aluminium in a mid-engine supercar chassis with respect to torsional stiffness.
