Hub International Partner Lead Academic: Professor Peter Middendorf
The Institute of Aircraft Design at the Universität Stuttgart is headed by Professor Peter Middendorf, and has over 40 years of experience. Fields of activity include Aircraft Pre-Design, Lightweight Design, Composite Structures (including textile pre-forming technologies, injection techniques, sandwich structures/ folded cores); and Wind Energy. Facilities include: static and dynamic testing facilities for coupons and structures; high-temperature testing device (1600 degree); textile preforming machines for composite manufacturing (braiding, stitching, embroidery); composite manufacturing lab (autoclave, press, filament winding machine, heating chambers), and mechanical workshop. The Institute works with industrial partners from sectors including aerospace, automotive, SMEs, composites, and wind energy.
Research topics within the Composite Materials group include Fibre Coating, Alternative Reinforcement Materials, Surface Technologies, and Nanotechnology. Research into Composites Manufacturing includes: Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM, VaRTM); High Pressure RTM; Vacuum Infusion (VARI); Warm pressing; SMC; Polymer Infiltration and Pyrolysis (PIP); Liquid Phase Siliconizing; Filament-Wet-Winding; Fiber preforming / Handling; and Composites Simulation.
