‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Stories’ is a project initiated by the EDI Champion aiming to build an inspiring community and foster the growth and progression of women and other minority groups across the Hub and the wider composites community. Hub Members, or those associated with the Hub share their individual experiences and views on EDI. The stories are published in the Hub’s quarterly newsletter. The Hub has recently teamed up with the Future Liquid Metal Engineering (LiME) Hub, the SUSTAIN Manufacturing Hub, the Future Manufacturing Hub in Manufacture using Advanced Powder Processes, and social enterprise Inclusioneering on the Material Made Smarter Centre (MMSC) Cross-hub EDI project. The scope of this project is to create an EDI action plan that integrates and extends the overall MMSC project plan. The key objectives are:
•Discover and prioritise high level EDI challenges and opportunities for MMSC
•Contextualise EDI within the broader project
•Establish EDI Governance
•A framework of accountability that defines and controls the outputs and direction of EDI within industry 4.0 and Materials Made Smarter
•Define action plan, milestones and success measures
The Hub is keen to engage with external institutes, schools, and other stakeholders to disseminate research outputs, to raise accountability and transparency of composites research among the public, and to encourage participation in composites research from minority groups. The Hub recognises the need for understanding the barriers preventing minority groups from pursuing a career in composites research and seeking solutions to remove such barriers. The Hub believe outreach activities and public engagement can provide effective communication channels to address these challenges.
